Friday was full of fun. BLACKLIST put on a rail jam in front of the shop courtesy of ROME SDS. They brought out a van, some snow, a box, and filled up the parking spots directly in front of the shop. Aside from a silver echo who decided 2hr parking meant all day is ok, the event went off really well. A lot of people came out, had a blast, and definitely showed that there is a thriving snowboard scene in Greeley. I shot a few photos of the event before rushing off to The Farm for the evening skate sessions. (click through to flickr for download)

As usual the skate sessions went off at the park, however I must give huge props to Buggy and Bryce for destroying everything they tried and both bagging some serious bangers for the evening.

Yeah that’s an alleyoop backside flip wallride from buggy out of the 4ft quarter into the 12ft wall… This kid is nuts!

bryce footplant
And Bryce brought out some crazy style with this frontside footplant rocking the tall socks and knee pads in true vert skater style. It was a great day with lots of skating, snowboarding, and friends.

And to end it all here is a photo shot by my friend Stephen Denton of Caleb from Reliance skateboards rocking a shirt I designed for them about a year and a half ago. It’s always fun to see people rocking the stuff you work on, especially when they’re doing a bluntslide kickflip out.

self portrait
The guys over at Cypher 13 have done some seriously inspiring work for me. A little over a year ago they knocked out these rad self portraits and today I decided to make one of myself. While their faces are composed on circles mine is created using lines at the signature 20˚angle and one rotated an additional 90˚. I’ve been having some brain farts in the creative department while trying to recover from this sickness, but this was good to get the creative juices flowing and re-focused for some new branding and identity pieces. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Tonight at The Farm I tried to, but was quickly found incapable of skating due to having bronchitis. Since I couldn’t skate, I decided it would be a good night to get out the camera and shoot a photo or two. Turned out I only had one flash with batteries so I made the best of the situation and tried to grab a little taste of the session down the 3 flat 3. Julio stepped up and stomped this huge pop shuvit with way too much style (yes this is the photo of the land). Also note the new BlueBeanie sticker he’s repping. Make sure you get yours and shoot some pics of the places you’ve added some fun to. I’m working hard on updating more so keep checking back often for lots of great things that are on their way for this coming year.

I just finished up and turned in my skateboard design for the Bordo Bello skateboard art fundraiser show that will be happening this coming Friday the 11th at the Andenken Gallery in Denver. There are over 250 different boards going to be there from a lot of amazing artists from all over the US. I’m honored to be a part of this event and hope that everyone will come out and support the cause. Here’s a few shots from my design “Old Man, New Sea” I hope you enjoy.

moorelove
I just helped launch a site and develop a logo for moore-love, a campaign in support of my good friend Elijah Moore. He’s been through some crazy stuff recently and this video should help explain it all a little more. So when you get a chance head over to moore-love.com and buy a shirt or make a donation to help him and his wife Joy amidst these crazy but miraculous times.

Trisha and I sure took quite the unexpected hike the other day. We decided to make an afternoon trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, as fall is coming in quick, and neither of us had been there before. Living in Colorado for nearly 6 years, within an hour of this place, I feel ashamed to say I had never gone until Tuesday, however, man am I glad I did, and I’m grateful for the awesome company I had along the way.
gazing
Right as we entered the park the trees were mind blowing. They seemed surreal as they were so gold they nearly glowed. We hopped out of the car and took a little trip into the meadows to enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery.
relaxing
A little farther up the road we hiked into the woods to see what we could find. Not too far in we came upon this great stream that Trisha sat by for a few soaking in the wonders of the wilderness. It’s such a blessing living in Colorado and being able to enjoy the city, yet so easily escape and feel like you’re thousands of miles away from anyone. This was one of those places for sure.
uh ohhhhh
As the day went on we stopped a few more places but in general just continued up and up. Soon enough we found ourselves well above the tree line, in tundra, wind, and snow and well out of breathe. So we took a few photos and quickly realized it was probably best for us to turn around and call it a day. The view from up so high was amazing and well worth the lack of feeling in our toes and wind burnt lips and noses. If you haven’t taken a day to just get away for a while, I highly recommend it. The experience was fun, refreshing, and humbling. Sometimes we get so tied up in the simplest and insignificant things, so take a hike, seriously, and get some fresh air and maybe more importantly a fresh perspective. Winter’s coming quick, don’t miss out on your chance, and please share the story if you don’t mind.

If you didn’t already know, now you know,
Mayer Hawthorne = Dope.

I’ve been jamming out to these tunes for a bit after getting a recommendation from Benny Gold, and I can say it’s quite refreshing and definitely worth the $10 on itunes. With a mix of modern steez and some soulful vocals Mayer Hawthorne rips in my opinion. And seriously, what a fun video so…Check him out!

about.
this category gives you more info about me

the basics

The Head Under the Hat: Mackey Hooker (Yes, Hooker really is my last name)
Born and Raised: 2/3 California, 1/3 a far off land known to some as Wyoming.
Living and Working in: ColoRADo for the past 6 years, and I love it!
What I Actually Do: The BlueBeanie project is rooted in the action sports, music, and youth cultures.  I create powerful brands, bold statements, and fun times through Branding and Identity Development, Illustration, and Print Design for individuals and corporations.

background

It’s really all about fun. I’ve been making art longer than I can remember and have heard some pretty funny stories from my parents and relatives about my early childhood art experiences. I would often be found drawing dinosaurs, getting mad, crumbling up the paper, and throwing it in the trash because it didn’t look as good as “what was in my head,” or spending hours upon hours meticulously drawing every scale one by one on a fish so that it looked “right.” I guess I haven’t changed too much since those days. This passion and drive followed me as I grew, traveled, and got involved in and with lots of different activities, projects, and people. I attended college for art during the school year, and traveled as a skateboarder over the summers. This interplay between visual arts and more expressive art forms has molded me into an artist who is passionate not only about the piece produced, but the process of getting there, and the overall expression, intention, and user interaction of my work. In the end, it still is, as it always has been, fun. I’m blessed by the people I get to work with and excited to see who I will be honored to collaborate with and work for in the future.

education & experience

I attended the University of Northern Colorado from 2003 through 2007 and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (BFA) and a K-12 teaching certification. I did teach art for one academic year and then resigned to pursue other endeavors. I have been blessed to work with some amazing people on an extensively large variety of projects. I believe in building relationships with my clients and establishing a friendship that goes beyond the task at hand. I’ve come to see that we’re all more motivated and excited when we’re with our friends, therefore this is how I like to approach all my projects. Some of my friends I’ve been lucky enough to work with include Reliance Skateboards, Tony Hawk, Death2Life Revolution, Brian Sumner, MillionMan Magazine, KIA, Untitled Skateboards, Anticlothes, Flatirons Community Church, Cash Hollistah, Xomba, and many more.

The rest of the time

Anything that involves a board and me riding it has always provided a happiness that surpasses those “normal” sports and hobbies in my mind.  I love skateboarding a little more than the rest, but not much can beat a powder day with my best friends, getting pounded by waves on a beautiful beach, or cruising some long, fast hills through the suburbs at midnight.  My life has been filled with amazing people, experiences I never dreamed would come true, and a saving Grace that keeps me on my knees every day.  Regardless of what I do, or where I go, it is and will always be all about Jesus and None about me.
